Halogen Incandescent Light Bulbs
Though the invention of incandescent lamps were a revolutionary one, the only con they had was that they were very energy inefficient. The upgraded version of halogen incandescent light bulbs was a much greener alternative. They met the standard of federal minimum energy efficiency and can be used with contemporary tools and applications.
Fluorescent Light Bulbs
By the time the industrial buildings were wired for lighting, it was quite obvious that more energy-efficient types of bulbs were needed. Then comes the fluorescent lamp. These types of light bulbs are typically a long, glass tube. Inside this tube, inert gas like argon and a small amount of mercury is present, coated with a phosphor powder.
Each end of the tube has an electrical circuit, with small electrodes inside the tube, which are of the same type that you would come across in an incandescent lamp. The outer ends of the fluorescent lamps have two contact pins that are plugged into a ballast, which supplies power to the bulb.
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)
After fluorescent bulbs proved not to be very energy efficient, came compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs are a greener option as they consume less electricity than the other bulbs. As a result, changing into CFLs can reduce the electricity bills in a short amount of time.
While fluorescent light bulbs proved to be efficient than the older competitors, the mercury contained inside the fluorescent lamps is an environmental hazard and toxic if the lamp breaks.
